Open Source Repository

Microfluidiscope

An open repository for building, understanding, and sharing microfluidics with schools and the world.

The microfluidiscope is a modular system of microfluidic channels that can separate cells by size. By providing different cultures of microalgae, students are encouraged to run them through the microfluidiscope and observe the separation process through its transparent structure. The sorted cells are then deposited into a hydrogel, where they continue to grow. Over time, students can observe shifts in colour and position between their samples, revealing differences in algal health, growth stage, and species through specific pigmentation.
